The 5th UIC Innovative Teaching Contest

In order to promote teaching excellence at UIC and nominate outstanding teachers for the 5th National and Guangdong Innovative Teaching Contest (第五届全国高校教师教学创新大赛广东分赛暨广东省高校教师教学创新大赛), We are pleased to announce that the 5th BNU-HKBU United International College Innovative Teaching Contest is scheduled to commence from now to mid-January 2025.

Theme
: Promote teaching innovation and nurture top talents (推动教学创新,培养一流人才)

Eligibility: All full-time teachers at UIC are eligible to participate in the contest, either as a team or individually. The lead instructor must have taught the participating undergraduate course for more than two times in the past five years.

If the participation is on a team basis, the team should have one lead instructor and no more than three support instructors. (The team members of the industry-education integration group must include at least one part-time teacher hired from the industry, who has been deeply involved in education and teaching for more than 2 years).

Applicants will be divided into 7 major groups based on areas such as “Four New” construction, basic courses, curriculum ideology and politics, and industry-education integration.

Among these, Groups 1-6 are divided based on the professional and technical title of the lead instructor: a. Professor, b. Associate Professor, and c. Assistant Professor/Senior Lecturer/Lecturer. Group 7 is not classified by the professional and technical titles; it is a separate category dedicated to the Industry-Education Integration track.

The application materials include:
1. Teaching Innovation Report or Curriculum Ideology and Politics Innovation Report, or Industry-Education Integration Innovation Achievement Report (length: 4000 words, including abstract and main text) (教学创新成果报告或课程思政创新报告,或产教融合创新成果报告, 含摘要、正文不超过4000字)
2. Class Teaching Video Recording and Relevant Materials (课堂教学实录视频及相关材料)
The video should be a complete one of teaching-hour real class video recordings. The supporting materials for the video recording should include:
a. The course syllabus (Including the course title, course nature, course units, target students, course introduction and objectives, course content and plan, and course evaluation)
b. The teaching plan and the PPT slides corresponding to the video.

Special Reminder: According to the requirements of the provincial contest, the submitted video recording and other materials (except the scanned copies of the original supporting materials) should not disclose any personal identity information, such as the participant's name, affiliated school, or department.

Awards:
1. Award certificates and cash prize will be provided for Grand Prize, First Prize, Second Prize, Third Prize, and Honorable Mention.
2. Outstanding participants will be recommended to participate in the contest at the provincial level.

AI Empowers Education 7 | Integrating Generative AI in History Education

Facilitator: Dr. Xiaolong DIAO (Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science at UIC)

Xiaolong DIAO is an intellectual historian and a philologist. He's mainly interested in the intellectual history of the Qin-Han periods and the cultural exchange between China and Japan. His research touches on a range of areas, including Confucian Classics, Chinese philology, Chinese intellectual history, and Japanese sinology.

Abstract: This speech addresses the challenges posed by the advent of Generative AI in the education system today. It shares experimental experiences from a structured and forward-looking study on integrating Generative AI into history education. The study tackles significant challenges in teaching history at the undergraduate level, such as varied foundational knowledge, lack of engagement, and insufficient critical interaction with historical materials. By emphasizing ethical considerations and data privacy, this approach demonstrates a responsible and timely application of AI in education.
Additionally, the speaker will analyze results from a firsthand survey of students using Generative AI and will reflect on the evolving role of educators in navigating this technological revolution.

Social and Computational: Exploring the Intersection of Technology and Society

Facilitator: Dr. Muzhi ZHOU (Assistant Professor at HKUST (Guangzhou))

Dr. Muzhi ZHOU is an Assistant Professor in the Urban Governance and Design Thrust at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). Previously, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the department of Sociology, University of Oxford, supported by the European Research Council. She has expertise in the field of gender and family, life course and digital inequality. Her recent work focuses on how social inequalities are reflected in the digital/virtual society. Her work has been published in top journals such as Gender& Society, Population and Development Review, and Chinese Sociological Review.

Our first speaker will explore essential considerations for educators integrating GenAI into classrooms and assessments, and strategies to rapport and cultivate digital literacy and ethics in classrooms. The second talk invites participants to map the shifting nature of ‘truthiness’ in our classrooms, introduces the strategy of ‘reparative readings’, and discusses how to develop critical relationships with these emerging technologies. The final presentation highlights how teacher training is adapting to prepare teachers not just to use technology, but to innovate pedagogically, ensuring that AI enhances educational outcomes. This seminar aims to provide educators with valuable strategies and insights to responsibly shape the digital minds of the next generation.

Call for Participation | 13th Quarterly Project Meeting on Sustainable Development in Higher Education

To continuously support the development of high-quality, professional new teacher development programs in higher education institutions, the association has concentrated on discussions about new teacher development over the past two years and has achieved several outcomes. Accordingly, this meeting will summarize the outstanding practical experiences related to new teacher development from recent years and will discuss and forecast the key issues that should be prioritized for new teacher development in universities moving forward. Additionally, this meeting will announce the list of universities recognized in the association's selection of outstanding new teacher development cases and invite the recognized universities to share their experiences in new teacher development.

To deepen the comprehensive reform of higher education and accelerate the construction of a strong province in higher education, the Academic Seminar hosted by the Guangdong Higher Education Association will be held in early December in Foshan. The Seminar will feature a main forum and sub-forums. This year’s conference will focus on “Deepening the Comprehensive Reform of Higher Education and Accelerating the Construction of a Strong Province in Higher Education.” Original, high-quality papers will be included in the conference proceedings.
