Open Classroom Initiative for Peer Observers

The Open Classroom Initiative (OCI) fosters a collaborative environment for faculty to improve teaching practices through peer observation. In Semester 2 of 2023-24, OCI will be held in two phases:
· Phase I: 18 Mar (Week 5) to 29 Mar (Week 6)
· Phase II: 8 Apr (Week 8) to 19 Apr (Week 9)
Open classrooms will be announced for observation registration about one week before each phase.

Open Classroom Title: Python Programming for Beginners: A Free Elective Course for Everyone! Course Title: Python Programming for Beginners Course Type: Free Elective, Multiple Years Date & Time: 19 March OR 26 March 2024, 13:00 - 13:50 Description: This course provides students with basic knowledge of computer-oriented problem modeling and solving methodologies by using Python. Students will learn about the basic concepts of structured programming and how to develop elegant Python programs. This course uses the scaffolding pedagogy method, which involves gradually building up the complexity of the tasks students are asked to perform. After learning this course, students will be able to solve problems, explore real-world programming development challenges, and create small yet practical python applications. |

Open Classroom Title: Fostering Discussion and Critical Thinking in Research Skills with Mentimeter Course Title: Research Skills in Language Studies and TESOL Course Type: Major Required, Year 3 Open Period: 25 March 2024, 16:00 - 16:50 Description: Mastering research skills can be a challenge for Year 3 students, particularly when it comes to actively engaging with complex concepts and developing critical thinking skills. This open classroom session will showcase how Mentimeter, an interactive presentation tool, can address these challenges. I will be using Mentimeter to prompt students for discussion on key concepts at strategic intervals throughout my lecture. This will help students to better understand and master these concepts through active participation. |

Open Classroom Title: Writing argumentative essay conclusions Course Title: English for Academic Purposes III Course Type: Major Required Course, Year 2 Date & Time: 11 April,2024, 9:00-9:50 Description: Genre refers to abstract, socially recognised ways of using language. It is based on the idea that members of a community usually have little difficulty in recognising similarities in the texts. Drawing on Genre Approach, this session is to introduce and practice writing argumentative essay conclusions. It begins with identifying key components of a conclusion, then offers writing practice of summarising key points, restating a thesis and creating ideas for a future focus. It finishes with using an essay outline to write a conclusion. |

Open Classroom Title: Reflection After Game-base Learning Course Title: Environmental Awareness Course Type: University Core Course, Year 2 Date & Time: 18 April,2024, 15:00-16:50 Description: In the debriefing of the Fishbanks game, participants reflected on the challenges of sustainable resource management in a common pool setting. They discussed strategies used, outcomes achieved, and negotiations undertaken. The reflection highlighted the complexity of balancing competition with sustainable practices, and the implications of policy decisions like sustainable yield, permits, and quotas. The debriefing fostered a deeper understanding of real-world resource dynamics, emphasizing the importance of strategic decision-making and cooperation for sustainability. |

Open Classroom Title: Developing our Creative Strategies: An example from Music Appreciation Course Title: History of Western Classical Music Course Type: Free Elective Course, Multiple years Date & Time: 19 April, 2024, 10:00 -11:50 Description: The focus of this session will be to show teaching methodologies that promote creative thinking. The session will use flipped classroom strategies and discussions in order to make students reflect on the value of a particular music composition by Johannes Brahms (his 4th Symphony) and its novelties, as well as its style conventions. This composition shows clearly the dilemma between conservative and progressive thinking, personal style and influences and other fights that we all face when we try to be innovative and move away from standard practices. |

Open Classroom Title: Motivating Students to Read and Write in the History Classroom Course Title: History of Southeast Asia Course Type: General Education (Foundation/Interdisciplinary Thematic/GE Capstone courses), Year 2 Date & Time: 9 April, 2024, 13:00-13:50 Description: The biggest challenge we face as classroom teachers in history courses is to motivate our students to read academic texts and to be able to engage with historical questions and issues as we do. In my open classroom session, I will demonstrate several practical strategies I designed for involving sophomore students to read more actively in my history classrooms, including non-history majors from business and musical studies backgrounds, as a way of instilling in them more aware of their personal motivation and responsibility for their learning and self-improvement. |
