Informal Academic Event | UIC Academic Drinks
Date &Time: 16:30-18:00, Oct 27 (Fri), 2023 Venue: CC323 Language: English Registration (Oct 19 – Oct 24, 2023): Click Here Registration Deadline: 23:59, 24 Oct (Tue) Eligibility: Teaching/Teaching support staff
As a thriving research university, UIC hosts many fascinating projects led by faculty members across different disciplines. However, there are not many opportunities for colleagues who work in different subject areas to learn about one another's work. With UIC Academic Drinks, we aim to create a venue for informal conversations between scholars in different subjects, to discuss research ideas, new findings, research-related teaching insights, establish collaborations, and just make friends. We plan to host one such meeting every month.
To stimulate the conversation, each event will showcase research from colleagues in different disciplines, who will give brief 10-minutes presentations about their work, and how their research facilitates teaching. On 27 October, this will include:
Dr. Raymond Shu Tak Lee, Associate Professor, FST, Computer Science and Technology, Artificial Intelligence Title: "AI in daily life"
Dr. Dianjing LI, Senior Lecturer, FHSS, DCOM, Media and Communication, Anthropology Title: "Being a Buddhist monk/nun in the mobile Internet world"
Since this is an informal event, you are welcome to come at any time, and it is okay to be late! The research presentations will start around 5 pm.

FYMSiC Meetup
Date & Time: 17:00 (EDT), Oct 26 (Thu), 2023 Presenter: Anna Stokke Language: English Venue: Online via zoom Eligibility: Teaching/Teaching support staff Zoom: Click Here Passcode: fymsic
Abstract: Principles from cognitive science can help us understand how students learn and retain information, which, in turn, can inform our teaching. This is often referred to as the “science of learning” and has been studied by cognitive scientists for many years. Although I have been teaching for over twenty years, I wasn’t aware of some of this research for most of my career. I became fascinated with cognitive science and how it can be applied to math teaching several years ago, and I have since had the opportunity to speak with and learn from several experts in the area. I will discuss cognitive load theory and some of the principles of cognitive science that are particularly relevant to math teaching and how these can be applied in post-secondary teaching. |
