Abstract: The ability to write proper English is a bedrock skill for academics who aspire to getting their research results published. Too often, regardless of scholastic merits, submissions are rejected by editors for poor English. This talk highlights the linguistic pitfalls to avoid in academic writing, such as the temptation towards “writing to impress, rather than to express”, and the preference for simplicity and clarity. Apart from stressing the need to keep a piece of writing error-free, the workshop will address an important question: “Must academic writing be boring?” In this one-hour presentation, the speakers will share insights and effective writing skills that make an article not only publishable but readable as well.
