On the morning of May 16, 2025, the fifth lecture in the “Beyond Boundaries” Teaching and Learning Series, titled Love Troubles: Digital Intimacy in Contemporary China, was successfully held in T7-301. Organised by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), the lecture aimed to promote professional development for faculty, broaden academic horizons, and encourage interdisciplinary thinking. It offered a platform for students and teachers to enhance their cognitive depth and academic growth across multiple dimensions. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Weishan Miao from the School of Journalism and Communication at Renmin University of China, who provided in-depth insights into the evolution and challenges of intimate relationships in China’s digital era. Over 30 faculty members and students attended the event.

At the beginning of the lecture, Dr. Vivien Wai Wan Chan, Director of the CTL, extended a warm welcome to Dr.Miao and gave a brief introduction to his academic background. Dr. Miao’s research focuses on the intersections of technology, culture, and society, with particular attention to marginality, inequality, and social justice in the Global South. His academic work has been published in several internationally recognised journals, and he regularly serves as a peer reviewer for SSCI-indexed journals and major academic publishers.

During the lecture, Dr. Miao drew on seven years of fieldwork, observations, and interviews to share a series of compelling stories about digital intimacy in China. Taking Blued, a global-leading live streaming and health education platform, as a case study, he analysed how intimate relationships are shaped within the contexts of postmodern society, the network society, and the platform society. He pointed out that dating apps are increasingly embedded in everyday, intergenerational life. This trend, he argued, not only reflects the evolving dynamics of digital intimacy but also offers important theoretical and practical opportunities for future research on de-marginalisation.
