From November 4 to November 15, 2024, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the Student Affairs Office (SAO) jointly held Stay Hungry: Meal with Your Professor in semester I of the 2024-2025 academic year. The activity aims to foster a more open and harmonious teacher-student relationship by providing a relaxed and enjoyable platform for students to invite teachers for lunch or afternoon tea. Through these informal gatherings, students can engage in in-depth discussions with teachers on a variety of topics, including career planning, further studies, academic research, and personal life, gaining valuable insights and advice.

In order to encourage more students to participate, the time schedule of the activity was optimised, extended from one to two weeks, giving students more opportunities to communicate with teachers face-to-face. With nearly 200 students and 80 teachers actively participating, the activity received an overwhelming response from students and teachers.
In the feedback of the activity, both teachers and students gave high praise. Students shared that it provides more flexibility than before, and the extended time allowed them to better adjust their study and extracurricular activities, so that they could make full use of the opportunity to communicate with teachers and gain a lot of valuable experience and advice.

Students of different years have different expectations and gains from the event. Newly admitted freshmen were more concerned about the direction of their studies, course choices, and troubles and confusion encountered in college life; senior students, especially juniors, were more focused on in-depth scientific research and exploring future career prospects, and many of them expressed the hope of seizing such a valuable opportunity to share their hearts and experiences with their familiar mentors before graduation. This activity not only allows students to discuss academic and professional issues with professors, but also seems to allow them to glimpse the other side of their usually serious teachers from such a relaxing moment, and to have in-depth communication at real-life and emotional levels, thus bringing more humanistic care and support to students.
Dr. Wai-wan Vivien Chan, Director of CTL, shared her feelings on the activity. She said that being able to step out of the classroom and have more insightful conversations with her students was an opportunity that she treasured very much. Through this activity, she was able to talk to the students and gain a deeper understanding of their daily life and campus activities, which gave her a more comprehensive view of their lives. This not only helps her to improve her teaching methods, but also further promotes positive interaction and empathy between teachers and students.

As Stay Hungry: Meal with Your Professor this semester came to a successful conclusion, teachers and students not only strengthened their communication and enhanced their relationship during a meal, but also realised a two-way interaction - both beneficial to teaching and promoting students' learning and growth. It was a successful activity that built a platform for students and teachers to communicate across classrooms and roles, showing the warmth and depth of education.
