The seventh session of the AI Empowers Education workshop series took place at the noon of Nov.20th 2024. This session focused on integrating generative AI (Gen AI) into history education and was led by Dr. Diao Xiaolong, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at UIC. The event attracted more than 30 enthusiastic participants, drawn in by its practical approach to leveraging AI in teaching.
Dr. Diao sharing his analysis on his survey
Dr. Diao began by presenting findings from a student survey on the use of generative AI, concluding that students frequently use AI in the understanding course material. He then explored practical applications of Gen AI in history education, discussing its potential to enhance teaching while emphasizing the importance of addressing ethical concerns, particularly regarding its impact on student development and academic integrity.
Dr. Milen Jissov gave an opening speech
The workshop fostered active engagement among participants, who explored various topics such as how Gen AI aids students in articulating ideas, its applications in history education, and the credibility of sources generated by AI. They also discussed the shifting role of teachers, emphasizing the need for systematic AI training and suggesting that the CTL organize additional lectures and workshops to support this learning process. Additionally, participants discussed the definition of "intelligence" in the context of AI. These discussions not only underscored the significance opportunity in the teaching of history empowered by Gen AI but also pointed toward an exciting future where educators, supported by initiatives like those from CTL, are empowered to redefine teaching methodologies and create a more innovative, inclusive, and effective learning environment.
Participants actively discussing about the use of Gen AI in education
This session provided participants with valuable insights into the transformative potential of generative AI in history education. It also deepened their understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with AI implementation. As part of the ongoing workshop series, the event further highlighted UIC’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technologies into teaching methodologies and fostering innovation across disciplines.
