Labor Day Events Fostering UIC Teaching Community

On May 4, 2023, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) held a Labor Day Brunch Party and an online sharing given by Dr. Thomas Huggins, Director of the School of Psychology at the University of Monterey, on the topic of " Psychological Well-being among International Teaching Staff in Zhuhai", designed to foster a collaborative and supportive academic environment with approximately 70 teachers in attendance.

The Labor Day Brunch Party witnessed the vibrant teaching community at UIC. Co-organized by the UIC Union, the event provided an opportunity for teachers to come together and enjoy a delicious brunch. This informal gathering created a warm and upbeat atmosphere where teachers could relax, chat, and share experiences on work, academic and life. CTL continues to organize events to bring teachers together.

In conjunction with the Labor Day Brunch Party, CTL hosted an online sharing on the topic of " Psychological Well-being among International Teaching Staff in Zhuhai". The sharing was based on a psychometric research with international staff teaching at various institutions in Zhuhai done by Dr. Thomas Huggins during his stay in UIC. Drawing on his extensive expertise and research in psychological well-being, Dr. Huggins articulated effective strategies and practices that help employees maintain the sense of coherence and face demands and the risk of burnout.

CTL has been committed to creating a supportive and enriching environment for its faculty and staff. Through events like these, CTL fosters a sense of community, promotes overall wellness, and encourages the professional growth of faculty and staff. These initiatives also demonstrate UIC's commitment to providing a supportive learning and working environment that enhances the overall quality of education and faculty experience.
