On October 26, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) held a sharing on President’s Award for Teaching. The recipients of UIC President’s Award for Teaching 2021-2022, Dr. Maggie Mei-Kit Tang and Dr. James Zhixiang Yang were invited to share their teaching experiences. Around 15 teaching staff attended this sharing.
Before the sharing, Vice President (Research and Development) Prof. Weijia Jia gave a welcome speech to the participants and explained how President’s Award for Teaching promotes teaching excellence.

Since the inception of the President’s Award in 2014, a total of 16 staff members have been selected by the Selection Panel as award winners for the President’s Award for teaching. The award is to recognize and reward the outstanding teaching performance and achievement of individual UIC staff members.
Dr. Tang, Associate Professor of Social Work and Social Administration (SWSA), is not only dedicated to teaching social work and social administration but also skilled in using her professional expertise to help students in the realms of mentoring, role modeling, and career counseling. She shared with colleagues the job duties besides teaching she enjoys doing, and how those social work values guided her teaching and supported students’ learning.

Dr. Yang, Assistant Professor of Chinese Language and Culture Centre (CLC) and Chinese Culture and Global Communication (CCGC), enthusiastically teaches Chinese culture, history, and literature. He is also committed to publishing his works on John Dewey and Confucius, as well as Chinese intellectual history. His speech focused on how to enjoy University Chinese from an interdisciplinary perspective and provided vivid examples of how to combine interdisciplinary approaches into his University Chinese course teaching.

At the end, Prof. Jia thanked Dr. Tang and Dr. Yang with souvenirs in appreciation of their thoughtful preparing and sharing.
