Academic English Writing Workshop
This year, the Centre for Teaching and Learning is sponsoring a series of Academic English Writing Workshops, the first of which was held on Sep 24. These workshops aim to promote enhanced effectiveness in academic writing, as well as teaching and learning to all ranks of teaching/teaching support staff. A total of 120 of them have signed up for these talks. They also enjoy a free lunch courtesy of our university.
The first lesson taught by Mr. Philip Yeung was entitled The 6 principles (vertical threads)—or the science of writing.
Educated at the University of Toronto, Philip briefly attended Exeter College, Oxford University on a scholarship. He is a long-time freelance columnist with the South China Morning Post, currently a speechwriter to President Tang Tao of UIC and previously to 11 other university presidents.
Mr. Philip Yeung
Vice-President (Academic) Prof Huaxiong Huang gave an opening speech
Philip considered Chinese the ultimate outsiders in learning English, so there is a long way for Chinese English learners to use more authentic English. He then shared some of the 101 Things Your English Teachers Never Told You in his first lesson.
Incidentally, the idea for these academic writing workshops came from Prof Huang, VP for Academic Affairs who had previously attended several of Philip’s training sessions to students and administrative staff in the past year.
Mr. Michael Fisher
The lesson was highly interactive, during which Philip also asked Mr. Michael FISHER, an ELC lecturer for his understanding of certain concepts and English usage.
Audience answered Philip’s questions
President Tao Tang introduced Philip Yeung, and thanked him for his service
The coming workshops will be held on Oct 8/15/22/29, Nov 5/12/19/26, Dec 3. For more information, please contact Ms. Sandy Chen Chen (Administrative Officer of CTL) at 3677134 or sandychen@uic.edu.cn
