Academic Writing Workshop丨Writing for an Academic Journal: An Editor’s Perspective

On 28 March, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) was honored to have Prof. John Corbett share his experiences in “Writing for an Academic Journal”. Nearly 50 teaching/teaching support staff participated in this workshop.

Prof. Corbett is an internationally well-known scholar, having published widely on literature and linguistics, including books, chapters and journal articles. He edited the top quartile, SSCI-indexed journal, Language and Intercultural Communication for five years, and he continues, on occasion, to co-edit special issues as a guest editor. As a scholar who has always been interested in academic writing, Prof. Corbett also developed blended courses in area about English for Medicine, and English for Agriculture, when he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Very recently, Prof. Corbett became a new Bilibilier with more than10,000 followers! His first clip has been viewed about 92,000 times.

Prof. Corbett introduced the overall journal manuscript submission process from an editor’s perspective. He provided six takeaways: (a) choose your journal carefully; (b) read other copies/scan the contents of past issues; (c) read about the scope of the journal on its website; (d) check the indexing; (e) understand the review process; and (f) have faith, take advice from your fellow scholars, and persevere.
