On 27 May, 2022, the fifth and penultimate Academic Writing Workshop in semester 2 of 2021-2022 was held by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) in T6-105. We were honored to have Prof. Adolf K.Y. Ng as our guest speaker this time. He made an inspirational sharing on the theme of Effective Writing Strategy and Successful Journal Publications. In total, over 50 audiences attended this workshop.
Prof. Ng is a professor at the Division of Business and Management. He is an Oxford doctoral graduate and excels in the research of transportation economics, climate change adaptation planning, transportation infrastructure planning and management, and global supply chains. His scholarly outputs include more than 220 influential academic publications and in the 2021 report released by Stanford University (US) on the List of the World’s Top 2% Scientists, he was included in both the ‘career-long impact’ and ‘single year impact’ sub-lists. Prof. Ng is currently an associate editor of Maritime Policy & Management and The Asian Journal of Shipping and Logistics, and an editorial board member of reputable scholarly journals, including Journal of Transport Geography and Transportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment.

During the workshop, Prof. Ng shared his hands-on experience on how an effective writing strategy can and should be developed to enhance the competitiveness of papers in gaining publication slots, based on his experience as an author and journal editor. ‘The focus is not just on the research itself’, he said, ‘but how attention on the writing style and fine-tuning of sections, such as abstracts, introductions, and conclusions can substantially enhance the chance of getting papers published inleading journals’. After his speech, audiences asked about Prof. Ng’s opinions and experiences on specific parts of paper writing. Prof. Ng made delightful interaction with the audiences.
