AI Empowers Education 7 | Integrating Generative AI in History Education
Facilitator: Dr. Xiaolong Diao (Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science at UIC)
Xiaolong Diao is an intellectual historian and a philologist. He's mainly interested in the intellectual history of the Qin-Han periods and the cultural exchange between China and Japan. His research touches on a range of areas, including Confucian Classics, Chinese philology, Chinese intellectual history, and Japanese sinology.

Abstract:
This speech addresses the challenges posed by the advent of Generative AI in the education system today. It shares experimental experiences from a structured and forward-looking study on integrating Generative AI into history education. The study tackles significant challenges in teaching history at the undergraduate level, such as varied foundational knowledge, lack of engagement, and insufficient critical interaction with historical materials. By emphasizing ethical considerations and data privacy, this approach demonstrates a responsible and timely application of AI in education.
Additionally, the speaker will analyze results from a firsthand survey of students using Generative AI and will reflect on the evolving role of educators in navigating this technological revolution.
