About Presenter:
William H. Baxter is a Professor of Linguistics and Asian Languages and Cultures, and specializes in historical linguistics. He was born in 1949 and received a bachelor's degree in anthropology from Amherst College in 1970. Later, he entered Cornell University and started studying ancient Chinese. In 1977, he received his PhD degree in linguistics and studied under the supervisor of linguist Prof. Nicholas Bodman from Cornell University. In 1983, he joined the University of Michigan, where he is currently a Tenure-track Professor of Linguistics and Asian Languages and Cultures. His book, A Handbook of Old Chinese Phonology (Mouton DeGruyter, 1992), presents a reconstruction of the pronunciation of Old Chinese (the language of the earliest Chinese literary texts). A revised and updated reconstruction is presented in Old Chinese: A new reconstruction (Oxford University Press, to appear in late 2013 or 2014), by Professor Baxter and Laurent Sagart (CNRS, Paris). His current and recent teaching includes Deciphering Ancient Languages, Language in Science and Nature, Asian Travelers, Languages of Asia, Language and History, How Different is Chinese? and Sinological Tools and Methods.
Abstract:
The lecture will share the origin of Prof. Baxter's path to Chinese linguistics research, discuss his journey of exploring the academic path influenced by his predecessors and fellow scholars, and evaluate and reflect on his own academic path.
Light refreshments will be served. We look forward to seeing you there.
