Topic 1: Besides Teaching Class

Presenter: Dr. Maggie Tang

About the Presenter:

Dr. Maggie Tang was born in Hong Kong. She completed her master’s and doctoral degree in the United States. Dr. Tang has teaching social work for 14 years, 3 at Stockton College of New Jersey, and 11 at UIC. Prior to teaching social work, she was a social work practitioner, practicing in San Francisco for 10 years. She is the warden of Literary Education Hall and she enjoys spending time with students.

Abstract:

Dr. Maggie Tang loves teaching but there are many jobs and duties she enjoys doing outside the classroom. These include but are not limited to mentoring, role modeling and counseling. As a social work professional, she has been using social work values and principles to direct her teaching practice and job duties that she carries out around the school. Those social work values include nonjudgmental attitude, self-determination, integrity to name a few. She would like to share with colleagues the job duties besides teaching she really enjoys doing, and how those social work values guide her teaching and support students’ learning.


Topic 2: Enjoying University Chinese from a Multidisciplinary Dimension

Presenter: Dr. James Yang

About the Presenter:

Dr. James Z. Yang obtained his Ph.D in the program of educational studies from the University of Oklahoma in 2016. Currently, he acts as an assistant professor of the Chinese Language and Culture Center (CLC) at BNU-HKBU United International College, enthusiastically teaching some courses pertinent to Chinese culture, history, and literature. Likewise, he is committed to publishing his works on John Dewey and Confucius, as well as Chinese intellectual history.

Abstract:

Dr. James Yang’s speech focuses on how to enjoy University Chinese from an interdisciplinary perspective. Firstly, Dr Yang will share his understanding of the course of University Chinese in UIC. Secondly, he would like to discuss a hidden curriculum behind such a course in the context of liberal arts education. Thirdly, James will provide a vivid example of how to combine interdisciplinary approaches into his teaching.
