Beyond Boundaries" T&L Lecture Series #7 | Redesigning Assessment for the AI Age: Introducing the AIAR Custom Bot Successfully Concluded

(Redesigning Assessment for the AI Age: Introducing the AIAR Custom Bot)。

Prof. SANSOM

On October 30, 2025, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) successfully hosted the "Beyond Boundaries” T&L Lecture Series #7 titled “Redesigning Assessment for the AI Age: Introducing the AIAR Custom Bot”. The event featured Prof. Matthew James SANSOM as the speaker, attracting active participation from numerous faculty members and students.

Prof. Matthew James SANSOM is a Professor of Music at BNBU with over 25 years of academic leadership experience. Having previously served as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) at Sunway University in Malaysia, he has held senior positions at multiple universities worldwide. Since the launch of ChatGPT, he has actively explored AI's impact on education and is serving as guest editor for the “AI and Education” special edition of BNBU's Innovative Teaching and Learning Journal, scheduled for publication in 2026.

The lecture began with an opening address by Dr. Milen JISSOV, Associate Director of CTL. Dr. JISSOV provided a brief introduction to Prof. SANSOM's academic background, professional achievements, and research in AI applications, setting an engaging tone for the session.

During the lecture, Prof. SANSOM delved into the fundamental challenges that generative AI poses to assessment in higher education. He emphasized that traditional take-home assessments face serious validity concerns in the AI era, noting that simply preventing AI-assisted cheating fails to address the core issues. As a key solution, he introduced the AI Assessment Redesign Assistant (AI-ARA). He also presented a complementary "AI Assessment Review Checklist," providing educators with both a systematic process and actionable framework for evaluation. Through precise analysis of current challenges, Prof. SANSOM presented a comprehensive solution covering diagnosis, redesign, and implementation. This approach provides educators with valuable conceptual frameworks and practical strategies for developing more valid and equitable assessment methods in the age of AI.

Prof. SANSOM’s insightful sharing provided both a practical toolkit and fresh perspectives for teachers and students navigating AI’s impact on educational assessment. We look forward to bringing more inspiring intellectual exchanges to our campus through "Beyond Boundaries" Teaching and Learning Lecture Series.
