BNBU新教师岗前培训成功落幕,助力提升教学技能 | Induction Program Successfully Concluded: Enhancing Teaching Skills at BNBU (Semester 1, 2025-2026)

Marking the beginning of the 2025-2026 academic year, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at BNBU successfully concluded its latest Induction Program (IP) for the fall semester. The program's six comprehensive workshops were tailored to provide new faculty and teaching support staff with core principles in teaching effectiveness and to promote academic excellence, while supporting the continuous growth of all instructional staff.

Workshop Series Overview

1. E-learning: Brief introduction and Tutorial on iSpace (September 5)

Ms. Suri Suyi LI (IT Officer) conducted a practical training session on BNBU's e-learning platform, iSpace. The tutorial equipped attendees with essential skills in navigating the iSpace system, uploading course materials, and using blended learning tools, enabling faculty to confidently incorporate technology into their teaching and enhance communication with students.

2. Innovative Teaching: Transdisciplinary Education and the Flipped Classroom Approach (September 10)

Prof. William CHEUNG (AVP – Transdisciplinary Education, HKBU) and the CHTL team led by Dr. Theresa KWONG (CHTL Director, HKBU) conducted a workshop featuring two key topics. The session began with Prof. CHEUNG, who detailed HKBU's pioneering journey in creating and designing a transdisciplinary education curriculum. Following this, Dr. KWONG and the CHTL team presented on the flipped classroom approach, demonstrating how shifting direct instruction outside the classroom creates time for active, applied learning. Together, these talks provided faculty with diverse strategies to design student-centered experiences for preparing future-ready graduates.

3. Practical Implications of Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) and Criterion-Referenced Assessment (CRA) (September 19)

Dr. Jesse Owen HEARNS-BRANAMAN (Associate Professor of FHSS) led the workshop on "Practical Implications of Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) and Criterion-Referenced Assessment (CRA)." The session addressed key aspects of course design, including how to formulate relevant CILOs, schedule assessments effectively, and develop clear rubrics to ensure consistent and objective grading.

4. Introduction of a New Mentor Caring Program (MCP) (September 22)

Dr. Maggie Mei-Kit TANG (Associate Professor/Assistant Dean for Student Affairs of FHSS) and Ms. Joann CHEN (Assistant Director of SAO) presented the Mentor Caring Program (MCP), an initiative designed to enhance the student support system at BNBU. The session detailed the program's core objectives: to provide structured student guidance, support faculty development, and optimize resources. Participants gained a clear understanding of the distinct roles within the MCP framework—including Academic Mentors, Faculty Coordinators of Student Affairs, and Peer Mentors—and how these roles collectively foster students' holistic development.

5. 掌握教学技能,提升教学水平 (How to Master Teaching Skills and Enhance Teaching Effectiveness) (October 24

Prof. Yanan LIN (CTL Special Advisor, Xiamen University Distinguished Professor) shared a comprehensive framework for mastering essential teaching skills, underpinned by the principle of continuous improvement. Leveraging his extensive experience, he outlined key pathways to teaching excellence, including methods for refining lectures and course materials, integrating AI tools to enhance efficiency, and implementing student-centered pedagogy. The session equipped participants with actionable strategies to directly increase their pedagogical effectiveness.

6. Large Language Model (LLMs) and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) (October 16

Dr. Raymond LEE (Associate Professor of FST) offered a comprehensive exploration of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI. The talk navigated from the core technical foundations to real-world applications and pressing ethical issues like bias and misinformation. Finally, Dr. LEE outlined emerging trends, framing a compelling picture of their expanding role in shaping various sectors and everyday experiences.

Program Impact
The program attracted over 150 faculty and instructional staff members, earning positive feedback for its systematic introduction to outcome-based teaching and learning, digital education strategies, pedagogical frameworks, and campus-wide teaching support services. Through these efforts, new colleagues gained a comprehensive understanding of BNBU’s teaching features and resources, while current colleagues had opportunities to refresh and deepen their existing knowledge. This initiative reflects BNBU’s steadfast commitment to elevating educational quality through advanced teaching methodologies and technologies. The valuable insights shared in the workshops are expected to inform future teaching strategies, fostering a more holistic and enhanced teaching and learning experience for both educators and students.
