Opening Remarks & Speaker Introduction

Q&A Session

On the afternoon of October 22, 2025, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) successfully launched the new academic year's "Beyond Boundaries" T&L Lecture Series. The event featured Prof. Lian-Hee WEE, a renowned Professor of Linguistics and Board Chair of the Transdisciplinary Undergraduate Programme at Hong Kong Baptist University, as the distinguished speaker. In his lecture, titled "An Imaginary on Teaching ‘Universal’ Themes," Prof. WEE delivered a thought-provoking academic presentation that attracted approximately 40 faculty and students.
As a leading scholar in phonology, Prof. Lian-Hee WEE’s research spans Phonological Theory, Phonetics and Optimality Theory. He also possesses profound expertise in transdisciplinary domains including Chinese dialects, language contact, and the language-music interface.
Prof. Edith Mei-Yee YAN, CTL Educational Developer, gave an opening remark and warmly welcomed Prof. Lian-Hee WEE.
Prof. WEE began by addressing the challenges of rigid disciplinary boundaries and the complexities of general education in higher education. He shared insights and reflections from years of transdisciplinary teaching experience. He proposed that by incorporating universal themes such as “Rhythm,” “Identity & Metamorphosis,” “Beauty,” and “Conflict,” educators can help students build meaningful connections between specialized knowledge and broader learning, fostering the courage to explore the unknown.
Prof. WEE also presented sample class activities designed to foster transdisciplinary thinking, such as exploring the relationship between ethical norms and biophysical principles, thereby guiding students to strike a balance between depth and breadth in learning.
Prof. WEE emphasized that achieving a truly “intellectual” education requires teachers to become transdisciplinary thinkers and mentors. He stressed the importance of progressive skill-building paired with philosophical reflection in curriculum design. He urged the need for higher education to refocus on the essence of knowledge and the architecture of thinking, rather than reducing university learning to mere skills training or overly generalized education.
The lecture was followed by an enthusiastic Q&A session, where faculty and students raised thoughtful questions about the scope of teaching “universal” themes and the practical implementation of transdisciplinary courses. Prof. WEE addressed each query with thoughtful and illuminating responses.
To conclude the event, CTL presented Prof. WEE with a selection of exquisite campus-themed gifts.
This lecture served as a remarkable opening chapter for the "Beyond Boundaries" lecture series, marking the beginning of a journey toward pedagogical innovation.
