On November 1, 2025, the New Era Undergraduate Teaching Innovation Seminar and the 11th Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) National Teaching Innovation Award South China Screening Round, jointly hosted by Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU) and XJTLU, successfully concluded at our University. Organized and executed by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), the event brought together nearly a hundred educators from universities across China. Focusing on rethinking pedagogy and fostering transdisciplinary integration in the age of AI, and guided by a “student-centered” philosophy, the seminar  explored new frontiers in undergraduate teaching innovation.

As the first large-scale joint teaching exchange event between its two host universities, the seminar pioneered a deep dialogue between joint-venture universities, characterized by their respective strengths in STEM foundations and in the Liberal Arts. It not only stands as a significant milestone in the collaboration between BNBU and XJTLU but also sets a positive example for teaching cooperation among joint-venture institutions. CTL played a key role in building the platform, integrating resources, and providing professional leadership, creating an open, collaborative, and mutually supportive environment for the professional development of all attending faculty.

Breaking Boundaries: Rethinking Teaching and Learning

The seminar commenced with an opening address by Prof. Yongming ZHOU, Vice President (Academic) / Executive Director of IAS, BNBU, hosted by Dr. Vivien Wai Wan CHAN, Director of CTL.

    • Prof. Yongming ZHOU emphasized that, “Teaching innovation should be a profound awakening that returns to the essence of education, igniting students’ innate curiosity and courage to explore the unknown, allowing each individual to find their own unique path to growth. It is only when educators diligently cultivate their ‘field of responsibility’ in teaching reform that they can pave the ‘road to success’ for their students. This is precisely why we are gathered here today: to return to the true purpose of education, explore new pedagogical frontiers together, and reshape the future of learning.”

    • Prof. Xiaojun ZHANG, Chief Education Officer of XJTLU, delivered a keynote speech titled “Ten Mindset Shifts for Teaching Innovation,” encouraging faculty to re-examine teaching objectives and assessment methods. He pointed out that “teaching innovation is a journey for educators to achieve self-understanding and value awareness.”

    • Prof. Zhong CHEN, Dean of SAI, BNBU, shared insights from our University’s pioneering explorations in transdisciplinary teaching reform, focusing on the integration of AI and Liberal Arts education. He stated that SAI is working across the University to deeply embed the principles of “whole-person education, innovative practice, and technology for good” into its teaching, aiming to cultivate future talents who possess both critical thinking depth and humanistic warmth.

Diverse Practices: Sparking Innovative Ideas

In the case study sharing session, three award-winning teachers from the 10th XJTLU National Teaching Innovation Award contest demonstrated diverse approaches to teaching innovation from different disciplines:

    • Prof. Zhijun WANG from Jiangnan University shared her project-based learning practice driven by both “AI and Design Thinking.”

    • BNBU’s Mr. Andy Boyu LIN introduced an experiential teaching model based on emotional intelligence.

    • Dr. Peng XUE from Guangdong University of Petrochemical Technology presented a case of course redesign that integrates AI technology into a traditional engineering subject.

The presenters’ practices vividly demonstrated the core philosophy of the XJTLU Award: “benefiting students through teaching innovation.”

Cross-Cohort Dialogue: Building Consensus on Innovation

A roundtable discussion featured past winners of the XJTLU Award, who engaged in an in-depth exchange on the themes of “Self-Motivation,” “Institutional Support,” and “Community Ecology.” Prof. Qianwei ZHANG from South China Normal University, Prof. Zhijun WANG from Jiangnan University, and BNBU’s Mr. Andy Boyu LIN shared insights from the perspectives of teaching-research support, systematic design, and ecosystem building, respectively. They discussed the support systems and growth pathways behind teaching innovation, highlighting the value of the professional community fostered by the XJTLU Award.

Collaborative Creation: Developing Action Plans

During the “Topic Exploration and Discussion Workshop” session, participating teachers, facilitated by Dr. Hui MA from the School of General Education, and Dr. Serene Runping ZHU and Dr. Tenglong WAN from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, engaged in group discussion and collaboration. They focused on topics such as “Setting High-Order Learning Goals,” “Designing Learning Activities,” and “Reforming Assessment Methods,” translating theoretical consensus into concrete, actionable teaching plans. This marked a crucial step from conceptual understanding to practical design.

Driving Innovation Through Competition: The Journey Continues

With the successful conclusion of the South China Screening Round, the journey of teaching innovation continues. Many participants noted that the event was not only inspiring conceptually but also provided practical pathways and methods for their future teaching practices.

As the organizer and driving force behind this event, CTL reaffirmed its commitment to serving as a platform for deepening cooperation among domestic and international universities, empowering teachers’ professional growth at these institutions, and fostering a vibrant ecosystem for teaching innovation at BNBU.
