Prof. Ching holds a PhD from the University of Oxford. She is currently Professor and Head of the Department of Chinese and History at City University of Hong Kong, and also the Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Her research focuses on Chinese social and cultural history, with particular emphasis on the regional history of South China, including Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao.

The lecture opened with a warm welcome from Dr. Vivien Chan, Director of the CTL, who served as the event’s moderator. She briefly introduced Prof. CHING’s academic background and outstanding scholarly achievements, setting the stage for the insightful talk to follow.

In her lecture, Prof. Ching recounted the development of her monograph Encountering Whang Tong: Little People and the Big World in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Pearl River Estuary. She described how she reconstructed Whang Tong’s transoceanic life using an extensive array of first-hand historical documents from both China and abroad. Through archival images, the audience gained insight into the historical context and the meticulous research process..

Prof. Ching then introduced the exhibition Encountering Whang Tong: Canton Trade, Botanical Paintings and Cultural Exchange in the 18th-19th Century, curated by the Guangzhou Maritime Museum and based on her monograph. She explained how the exhibition used an innovative first-person narrative approach, combining manuscripts, artwork, and immersive displays to connect contemporary viewers with this historical figure. This approach shows how academic research can engage the public.
