The Staff Mentoring Program (SMP) supports the professional development of new academic staff at the Lecturer and Assistant Professor ranks. It pairs them with experienced senior colleagues from their respective departments, providing valuable mentorship during their first year of teaching at UIC.
During Semester 2 of 2023-2024, the SMP organized two workshops and a luncheon gathering under the guidance of Dr. Edith Yan, an Educational Developer at the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The workshops focused on promoting equity in classrooms and cultivating inclusive teaching practices.
Workshop 3: Creating an Equitable English-Medium Instruction (EMI) Environment (March 27)
This workshop explored the rationale behind English as the language of instruction and introduced strategies to ensure equity within the EMI setting. Participants learned about using technology for accessibility, providing language support, and fostering inclusive learning environments. Mentors and mentees shared their observations on challenges and interventions related to EMI equity in their teaching practices.

CTL Director Dr. Yi-Lung Kuo presented certificates to mentors and mentees, recognizing their dedication to the program. Participants were then guided through the Seven Graduate Attributes and the ISCY Framework for 21st-century skills, emphasizing their importance for all UIC graduates. Mentees shared their progress on their Action Plan Implementation, receiving constructive feedback from mentors and colleagues. The workshops concluded with a discussion on establishing a Peer Coaching Community of Practice to further support ongoing development.
