On 10 March 2023, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) held the third session of Brown Bag Teaching Sharing (BBTS) in T2-202. BBTS is a program aims to encourage peer communication and learning among teaching staff at UIC. We are pleased to have Dr. Ivan Yuhui Deng (Assistant Dean for Students and External Affairs, Faculty of Science and Technology) share his experiences on adapting and practicing the 5E Teaching Model. Around 10 teachers attended this session.

Dr. Deng stated the 5 key concepts in classroom practice: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. He highlighted the importance of being intuitive and enlightening students in teaching, especially in science courses. To stimulate students’ interest in the course of Optimization, Dr. Deng and his team developed an online interactive platform for visualizing the process of optimization.

Dr. Deng also shared his experiences in preparing and participating in the Third Guangdong Innovative Teaching Contest. After the sharing, the attended audiences and Dr. Deng had a heated discussion on cultivating and enhancing autonomous learning ability and habits.
