On 10 Nov 2022, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) held the second session of Brown Bag Teaching Sharing (BBTS) in T2-202. BBTS is a new program organized by CTL aims to encourage peer communication and learning among teaching staff at UIC. We are glad to have Mr. Jonas Kelsch (lecturer of English Language Centre) as the second presenter of this series to share his experiences on the topic of English as a Second Language (ESL) by Collaborative Shared Documents. Around 10 teachers attended this sharing.
Mr. Kelsch sharing his experiences
Mr. Kelsch used Tencent Docs as an example of collaborative documents he practiced to teach English writing in class . He made a brief comparison between Tencent Docs and currently used teaching and learning tool at UIC. Tencent Docs' commenting function is showed to be speedier and more eye-catching. "We can track and share Tencent Docs’ content timely on WeCom, and I encourage students to use Tencent Docs when they need to do peer editing." Mr. Kelsch says. This approach also makes it easier for teachers to review each student's revision marks and helps in witnessing students' progresses.
Attended colleagues had a heated discussion with Mr. Kelsch
To better present the practicability, Mr. Kelsch operated an online document on site through WeCom and interacted with the attendees. Attended teachers asked questions in details of use. and had a heated discussion on the pros and cons of using Tencent Docs as a teaching tool.
BBTS provides teachers an informal and pleasing occasion to share their hands-on experiences and findings on teaching among teaching community at UIC, which stimulates the chance of peer learning and communication. The platform is available to all teaching staff to register themselves as presenters on a voluntary basis. We welcome more teachers to join in the future for promoting teaching excellence in UIC.
