On 19 Oct 2022, the first session of Brown Bag Teaching Sharing (BBTS) was held in T2-202 by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL). BBTS is a new program series organized by CTL this semester, aiming to provide an informal and pleasing environment for peer communication and learning among teaching staff. The platform is available to all teaching staff to register themselves as presenters on a voluntary basis. We were delighted to have Dr. Jingwei Yang (Assistant Professor of Data Science, Faculty of Science and Technology) as the first presenter of the series to share his experiences in Process Oriented, Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL).

Used his course as an example, Dr. Yang briefly introduced the concept and function of POGIL, discussed the possible obstacles in practice and encouraged colleagues to design their courses based on students’ needs.
After the sharing, colleagues had a heated discussion with Dr. Yang about developing POGIL classrooms in both STEM and social science fields. Hands-on experiences were shared among the teaching community with an aim to promote teaching excellence at UIC.
