Open Classroom Initiative for Peer Observers
sorted by timetable order
The Open Classroom Initiative (OCI) aims to create a safe and collaborative environment for teaching staff to enhance their practices through peer observation. You may observe either in a physical classroom for one/two hours or within an iSpace course over a two-week period (Monday of the first week to Friday of the second week), focusing on a specific aspect of teaching and learning practice and reflecting on the practice to improve your own skills. Alternatively, you can choose to open your classroom and receive feedback from peers.
OCI Period in Semester 1 of 2023-24:
· Phase I: 6 Nov (Week 8) to 17 Nov (Week 9)
· Phase II: 20 Nov (Week 10) to 1 Dec (Week 11)
Open classrooms will be announced for observation registration about one week before each phase.
To Observe an Open Classroom Session:
1. Register at OAS registration (http://oas.uic.edu.cn/) by selecting the open classroom session you wish to observe. Up to 5 seats will be provided for each session, and registration is on a first-come-first-served basis. You are welcome to observe more than one session within the phase.
2. A WeCom group will be created a day or a few days before the session, including the course instructor and registered observers, to facilitate any online discussion before, during, or after the observation.
3. For a physical classroom, please arrive on time and stay for the entire class session. For an iSpace course, please enter the course within the open period. While observing, please pay attention to the specific aspect of teaching and learning practice chosen by the course instructor for how it is implemented and its relationship with the whole learning experience.
4. After the observation, reflect on the observed classroom/online practices and complete the Observation Feedback Form. Please email it to Ms Arie Jin (ariexjin@uic.edu.cn) within one week after the observed open classroom session.
5. You will receive a certificate after successfully participating in observing any two open classroom sessions.

Open Classroom Title: German 2: Treating Young People as Adults Open Classroom Type: Physical Classroom Course Title: German 2 Course Type: Free Elective, Multiple Years Date & Time: 6 Nov or 13 Nov 2023, 13:00 – 14:50 Description: My first rule is that students are adults. Young adults perhaps, but adults still. That means that they have a responsibility towards learning (and living) independently. In this sense, my classes also adhere to the spirit of whole-person education as promoted by UIC in terms of taking their own responsibility and respecting themselves and others. This means that as a teacher, I will address them as such when teaching and interacting with them, even when addressing issues like incomplete homework, inattentiveness in class, or tardiness (though these are rare occurrences). |
